Over Esdoorn Reversi

Maple Reversi is the classic board game of reversi, also known as othello, played on a mossy eight-by-eight board on top of an old tree stump. You place honey-coloured maple discs with a red leaf; Basil the badger places dark walnut discs with a paw print. Every disc you place must trap a straight line of Basil's discs between it and another of yours, and the whole trapped line turns over to your colour.

Play against Basil on Easy, Medium or Hard, or switch to 2 Players and share one screen. Every day there is also a Daily puzzle: the same nearly full board for everyone, where only one move keeps your win and Basil plays the rest perfectly.

Hoe speel je

  1. Tap one of the glowing dots to place a disc. A dot only appears where a disc would trap at least one line of Basil's discs, across, up, down or diagonally. Hover or hold a finger on a square to see which discs it would flip.
  2. If a side has no square that flips anything, it passes and the other side plays again. The game ends when neither side can move, usually when the board is full. Whoever has more discs wins. Who starts alternates from one game to the next.
  3. A win scores 100 plus 2 for every disc of difference, a draw scores 30. Taking a corner scores 10, and a move that flips six or more discs scores 5. Medium doubles every point and Hard triples it.
  4. You have three hearts. Losing a game, or giving one up after your first move, costs a heart; a win gives one back. The game ends when the last heart is gone. In 2 Players there are no hearts and no score.
  5. In the Daily puzzle you play maple with 10 empty squares on Mondays and Tuesdays, 12 from Wednesday to Friday and 14 at weekends. Only one of your first moves wins. A move that lets Basil draw or win resets the puzzle. Solve it on consecutive days to grow your streak.

Besturing

Toetsenbord
Click a glowing dot to place a disc; the mouse shows which discs would flip. The arrow keys move a dashed cursor over the board and Space or Enter places a disc there. U takes back your last move, H shows a hint, N starts a new game and D opens the Daily puzzle.
Touch
Tap a glowing dot to place a disc, or press and slide over the board to preview a square, then lift your finger on the one you want. Undo, Hint, New and Daily sit below the board; the button next to the hearts switches between Easy, Medium, Hard and 2 Players.

Tips

  • Take corners whenever you can: a disc in a corner can never be flipped back.
  • Avoid the squares right next to an empty corner, especially the diagonal one. They often hand Basil that corner.
  • Flipping lots of discs early is not always good. Fewer discs and more choices of move for you, fewer for Basil, usually wins the middle of the game.
  • You get three undos and three hints per game, so save them for the moment a corner is at stake.
